Introduction
Christmas is a time for loved ones. Especially in a high-paced city like London, many Londoners look forward to the festive season as a chance to step back from the hustle and bustle of daily life. During these moments of stillness and laughter, memories in their purest form are created. These memories, reminiscent of the “core memories” depicted in the film Inside Out, become cherished treasures stored in the minds of millions during the Christmas season.
Angelica and I took on the task of asking a few Londoners about their favourite Christmas memories and what the season means to them. We then compared and contrasted these responses with American perspectives and our Christian theology. While some individuals were sceptical of our intentions or too busy to answer, the following interactions captured a wide range of sentiments held close to the hearts of many.

Our First Interaction
Our first interaction was with a lovely couple. After briefly explaining the project Angelica and I were working on, both partners shared distinct yet connected answers. The first partner described his favourite Christmas memory as the time he spent with his patients. I admired his selfless heart, choosing to serve those who might not have the opportunity to be with loved ones during the holidays. While many people see Christmas as a break from work, this individual stepped forward to offer companionship to those who needed it most.
His partner, on the other hand, shared that her favourite Christmas memories involved spending precious time with friends and family. She reflected on the evolving nature of her celebrations, shaped by the people she holds dear. Together, the couple described Christmas as a time of reflection, emphasising the importance of being present with loved ones.
As our first interaction, this set the bar remarkably high. I was struck by the couple’s openness and joy in sharing their thoughts and their compassionate hearts. Their perspective reminded me of how Jesus prioritised spending quality time with others, often in homes and over meals. While we didn’t delve into the couple’s spiritual background, it was heartening to witness their care for each other and for others, especially during this season.

Our Second Interaction
Our second interaction was with an enthusiastic young woman. Before we even finished explaining our project, she eagerly began to share her thoughts. Her favourite Christmas memory was spending time with both her nuclear and extended family. She eloquently expressed that the true present of Christmas is the presence of loved ones. She emphasised that, in such times, all we truly have to hold onto is each other. For her, Christmas is the perfect period to simply be and to experience rest.
I deeply appreciated her thoughtful response. She highlighted the chaos of the world today and how it often infiltrates the lives of Londoners and Americans alike. Even during the Christmas season, it is easy to become preoccupied with presents, conversations, and expectations, losing sight of the peace we can and should experience.
As a Christian, I resonated with her reflections on a deeper level. Christianity teaches me the importance of rooting my life in Christ and the profound peace that comes from abiding in Him (John 15). Yet, I admit that I sometimes fail to surrender my worries, succumbing to anxiety and stress. Life often throws challenges our way, but her words reminded me of the importance of building my life on a stable foundation—the solid rock of Christ
Final Reflections and Conclusion
The Christmas season holds a variety of meanings for different people, but one recurring theme Angelica and I observed is that Christmas is about love. Not the fleeting kind symbolised by a £5 box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but the authentic and precious moments spent with loved ones.
The greatest love we can celebrate during this season is the love of God, who gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, so humanity could be reconciled with the Father. The arrival of Jesus on earth is what makes Christmas truly special.
As we reflect on the stories we’ve gathered, let us remember to cherish our loved ones, serve those around us, and embrace the peace and joy that Christmas offers. May this season be one of rest, love, and connection for all.
